‘Diggin - Men at Work’ Art Print by Vertigo Artography.

Diggin - Men at Work is a gloriously conceived, cinematically beautiful and deeply funny surreal collage art print that brings together three of the great pillars of Italian civilisation, Roman grandeur, working class labour and an enormous plate of spaghetti bolognese into a single, perfectly composed image that feels simultaneously like a 1960s Italian film still, a vintage food advertisement and the most satisfying lunchbreak in the history of civil engineering. A giant blue and white decorative ceramic plate, the kind found in every Italian kitchen, trattoria and nonna's dresser, is piled high with spaghetti, rich tomato sauce and meatballs, rendered in the warm, saturated colour of vintage Italian food photography. Two men in 1960s workwear, jeans, casual shirts, long handled rakes and forks, are working the spaghetti with the focused, professional energy of road workers managing a particularly complex stretch of tarmac.

Behind them, in cinematic black and white: Rome. A grand neoclassical Roman monument, columns, ornate stonework, a sweeping staircase rises against the sky with the eternal, unhurried confidence of a city that has seen everything and is entirely unsurprised by two men raking a plate of pasta in front of it. A Roman street lamp. A bunch of pale cream grapes to the right. A large white fork leaning against the plate. The full colour plate against the black and white Roman backdrop creates a Fellini esque visual grammar, the eternal city in monochrome, the food in glorious, abundant, unapologetic colour, as if Rome itself is the backdrop to the real drama, which is always, in Italy, the food.

As demand grows for Italian restaurant art, Roman inspired decor, vintage food prints and kitsch kitchen art, Diggin - Men at Work sits at the perfect intersection of Italian cultural identity, surrealist wit and the deeply held belief that in Italy, lunch is always the most important work of the day. Perfect for Italian restaurants, trattorias, pizza restaurants, pasta bars, wine bars, Italian themed spaces, kitchens, dining rooms, eclectic living rooms and any wall that understands that the greatest civilisation in human history built the Colosseum, the Pantheon and also perfected the bolognese and that all three achievements deserve equal respect.
