Someone has been arranging the flowers. The cats have been watching, then at some point between the dahlias and the chrysanthemums, the cats became the flowers.
The painting is unmistakably Old Masters in its ambition, a lush, overflowing bouquet arranged in a silver urn against the warm amber ground of a Dutch Golden Age still life. The flowers are painted with the obsessive botanical precision of a 17th century Flemish master, chrysanthemums in deep crimson and burnt orange, white dahlias with their intricate petal geometry, soft purple asters, yellow pompom blooms, and the loose, generous foliage that fills every gap with the confidence of a composition that knows exactly what it is doing. The light falls from the upper left. The shadows are warm. The urn gleams.
Nestled within it all, with the absolute composure of creatures who have always belonged exactly where they are, are the cats. A white Persian peers from between the blooms at the upper left, its expression one of serene ownership. A ginger cat occupies the centre of the arrangement with the authority of a statement piece. A second white cat tucks itself into the lower left with the practiced invisibility of a cat that has decided this particular spot is now theirs. They are not hiding. They are simply part of the arrangement. They have always been part of the arrangement.
