Against a 1960s vintage aerial photograph of a coastal city harbour, the waterfront, the buildings, the green hills beyond, the bay curving in the warm afternoon light, a giant hand enters from the upper right, holding a silver dessert spoon and scoops out a large, wobbling, perfectly translucent chunk of vivid turquoise jelly from the harbour. Where the jelly has been removed, a dark void remains in the water, the negative space of the missing scoop, the bay now partially eaten, the harbour a dessert in progress.
In the foreground left, on the rocky hilltop overlooking the city, a man in a mustard yellow shirt and wife sit together, their backs to us, looking out over the bay, the classic 1960s family holiday viewpoint pose, the kind of image from a vintage tourism brochure or a retro holiday photograph, intimate, nostalgic, completely human. They are watching. They have noticed. They appear entirely unbothered.
The conceptual genius is the colour. The vivid turquoise of the jelly and the turquoise blue of the harbour water are exactly the same, the colour match is perfect and completely deliberate, which means the jelly IS the water, the water IS the jelly, and the bay has always been a giant wobbly dessert waiting for someone with sufficient ambition and the right cutlery to help themselves.
