On the toast are two people in 1960s/70s swimwear, a woman in a white bikini lying on her front, completely relaxed, a man in blue swimming trunks on his back, hands behind his head, the universal posture of someone who has found the perfect spot and has no intention of moving for anyone or anything, including, apparently, the infinite cosmos surrounding them on all sides. They are sunbathing on a piece of buttered toast floating through the universe. The galaxies continue in every direction. Nobody is concerned.
The scale contrast is the genius of the piece, the full, incomprehensible, billion galaxy enormity of the known universe on one side, two people on a piece of toast having a perfectly lovely afternoon on the other and the toast wins, because the toast has butter and good company and that is, when you think about it carefully, everything.
